2.2.2 To wash or not to wash

To wash or not to wash? Usually, home cooks ask this question. According to the *USDA washing your poultry and beef using faucet water is not a safe option.

Washing raw meat and poultry

Food safety experts do not recommend washing raw meat and poultry before cooking. Many bacteria are quite loosely attached and when you rinse these foods the bacteria will be spread around your kitchen. Of course, fresh fruits and vegetables still need to wash. The FDA recommends rinsing fresh fruits and vegetables with cold running water.

In fact, washing meat or poultry in water spreads bacteria throughout the kitchen-onto countertops, other food, towels, and you. Water can splash bacteria up to 3 feet surrounding your sink, which can lead to illness. This is call cross-contamination. However we recommend watching fish or meat after you purchase it, is there dirt or any kind of chemical things on it? In some cases need to clean it.

Washing Eggs

Do not wash eggs from the grocery store before putting them in the refrigerator. Washing is a routine part of commercial egg processing and the eggs do not need to be washed again. "Bloom," the natural coating on just-laid eggs that helps prevent bacteria from permeating the shell, is removed by the commercial washing process. It is replaced by a light coating of edible mineral oil, which restores protection for long-term home storage of eggs. Extra handling of the eggs in your home, such as washing them, could increase the risk of cross-contamination, especially if the shell becomes cracked.

*USDA; The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), also known as the Agriculture Department, is the federal executive department responsible for developing and executing federal laws related to farming, forestry, rural economic development, and food. It aims to meet the needs of commercial farming and livestock food production, promotes agricultural trade and production, works to assure food safety, protects natural resources, fosters rural communities and works to end hunger in the United States and internationally.
